In light of the rising energy from students wanting take action for student safety and against mass shootings, our youth leaders gathered to learn and plan actions in their schools on April 20th, the anniversary of the Columbine shooting.
Throughout the day, students heard powerful messages from Anne Sung, HISD school board member, Ben Monterroso, MFV Executive Director, and Mike Floyd, Pearland ISD school board member. More importantly, they heard from young leaders committed to continuing to take action and change the status quo.
Hannah Meeks, a Marjory Stoneman Douglass alum, and current freshman at Rice University, stated, “There is never a convenient time to be involved and start making change. Sacrifice is necessary, but worth it.” Hannah explained her organizing efforts on Rice University campus.
Kelly Choi, a Cy Woods High School student and one of the March for our Lives Houston organizer, gave us an insider perspective of the hard work and details needed to successfully coordinate the march attended by 15,000 Houstonians on March 24.
Ngoc Nguyen, a Debakey student, and Shaelyn Careaga, a Heights students, brainstormed with their peers actions that could be carried out on April 20th. Students were encouraged to stand up and demand change.
